SCENARIO

We live in a word designed for People with a moderate to high level of physical ability. Those who are different, are often socially excluded. This collective is growing faster every year, due to the progressive ageing of our population, causing a rapid increase in the number of People with Disabilities. The Public Administrations are taking steps to address this situation and are creating new lines of research in the so-called Assistive Technologies, aimed at enhancing the Quality of Life of People with Disabilities and favouring their integration into Society.

ROBOTIKER-Tecnalia is committed to the application of new technologies in the field of disability through the development of accessible and assistive technologies based on universal design that can help people with disabilities and elderly people to interact with the environment by means of:

Our commitment is to maintain continuous and close communication with associations of people with disabilities and elderly people in order to identify and satisfy their needs. Our mission is to provide solutions to the specific problems and needs of people with disabilities and elderly people, so as to give them the opportunity to enhance their quality of life.

REFERENCES

AGREEMENT WITH ONCE ROBOTIKER-Tecnalia has entered into a Collaboration Agreement with ONCE for the development of a small-size wireless Braille keyboard with Bluetooth technology. This allows people with visual disability (more than 80,000 in Spain and over one million in Europe) to use this communication interface with personal computers, PDA / Pocket PC, or mobile telephones.

INTELLIGENT HOME DEMONSTRATION PLATFOR In the framework of the DENOBIDE Project, we have developed a Technological Platform in fields of vital importance for the development of the Smart Home for People with Disabilities and Elderly People, putting special emphasis on control systems, user interfaces and communication systems. For many years, we have been committed to the application of Technologies in the field o Dependence. We have developed technical aids and accessible and Assistive Technologies based on the design for all principle so as to give people with disabilities the opportunity to interact with their environment and gain access to different information sources.

International Conference on Accessibility and Assistive Technologies for Dependent People-ableTech'08 Since 2004, ROBOTIKER-Tecnalia has held annual conferences in the field of Accessibility Technologies and in December 2008, held an International Conference ableTech’08as a forum where international experts of the sector of assistive technologies could exchange their experiences in order to learn the best practices from other countries.
